Next up: Rehearsals

This was a two-step process due to the logistics of housing and playing such a huge kit. I practiced the drum lines for about 6 weeks on a Roland V-drum kit. Love this kit! (Check out my Subdivisions cover on this page.) It allows me to practice any time without fear of disturbing anyone. I repeatedly rehearsed the grooves and fills. Some of the fills had to be altered to play them on the much smaller Roland kit, but I felt confident I'd be able to transpose the parts when I got to the larger acoustic kit.

The rehearsals really gave me a good feel for how the medley worked as a whole. I didn't make even one tweak after rehearsals began. Sweet.

After I started to feel like I could consistently (though not yet perfectly) make it through the arrangement, I decided it was time to move to phase 2 of rehearsals: renting a studio to set up the acoustic kit and work on the full presentation until it was ready to be recorded. This was getting real since I'd now have actual expenses. Rut-roh...

This is where Imperial Sound Studios in Danbury, CT saved the day! Will Tolentino hooked me up with a dedicated secure space where I could set up for the duration of my rehearsal schedule, which turned out to be a couple of months. I was locking myself in that room 4-6 days a week for 3-4 hours a night. I was sweating my ass off, but making extremely good use of the time there.
